17-month-old boy struck in hit-and-run crash
CANOGA PARK – A 17-month-old boy who was struck by a hit-and-run driver while his father pushed him in a stroller across a street in Canoga Park was hospitalized in stable condition today.
The accident in the 21100 block of Saticoy Street near Variel Avenue was reported about 9:05 p.m. Wednesday, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Devin Gales said.
The victim’s father, identified by ABC7 as Edgar Rencinos, was pushing his son in stroller alongside the boy’s mother when the crash occurred.
“I was crossing the street when the light was on green, and I just see a black (Lincoln) Towne Car that on the bumper had TCP on it, so it was like a limousine driver,” Rencinos told the station.
Rencinos said the driver was “an old guy” who “just came, made a left and just took me and my kid,” sending their bodies about 25 feet into the air before they came crashing down on the ground nearby. The mother was not hurt, the station reported.
Police said the driver fled westbound on Saticoy Street.
The toddler suffered multiple injuries and was airlifted to Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, said Gales, the city fire spokesman. The boy was in stable condition late Wednesday night, he added.
The suspect vehicle was described as a black 1990s sedan, said Officer Jason Lee of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Media Relations Section.
Anyone with information on the accident was asked to call 1-877-LAPD 24- 7.
