2 seriously injured in traffic collision in Orange
“Accident was Tuesday night on Santiago Canyon Road at Hunters Way, police said.”
Police are investigating a crash that left two people seriously injured when their vehicle collided with another on Santiago Canyon Road in Orange.
The crash occurred at 8 p.m. Tuesday when the driver of a gold Mitsubishi Diamante apparently lost control and struck a Chevrolet Suburban, said Orange police Sgt. Dan Adams.
The Diamante was traveling west on Santiago Canyon Road at Hunters Way when the driver crossed into opposing lanes of traffic and collided with the Suburban, which was traveling east on Santiago Canyon, Adams said.
The 42-year-old driver of the Mitsubishi and his 25-year-old passenger were taken to a hospital suffering from serious neck and back injuries, Adams said. They are expected to survive, he said.
The 42-year-old driver of the Suburban and his two small children were not injured, Adams said.
Adams said the initial investigation indicates the driver of the Mitsubishi was traveling at a high rate of speed. The speed limit on Santiago Canyon is 50 mph, he said.
Adams said it’s unknown if the driver of the Mitsubishi was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash.
Adams said the road was closed for about three hours Tuesday night while traffic investigators tried to piece together the accident. Investigators went back to continue the investigation Wednesday morning, which forced the closure of one lane in each direction on Santiago Canyon, Adams said.
“Unfortunately we’ve had a lot of high-speed accidents at this location over the years,” Adams said. “Some have been fatalities.”
