3 remain critical after freeway crash

IRVINE – A 78-year-old Newport Beach man and a mother and her young daughter from Moreno Valley remained hospitalized Monday with serious injuries stemming from a five-car smashup on the rain-slicked I-405 in Irvine on Saturday.

Salvatore Giannulli, of Corona del Mar, was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange with major injuries following the 8:34 a.m. accident.

Ana Maria Flores, 22, and her 4-year-old daughter were taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana with major injuries.
A dog died in the accident, which also involved a California Highway Patrol officer’s stopped vehicle.

Flores was getting onto the northbound I-405 at Culver Drive in her 2004 Jeep when she lost control, skidded to the middle lanes and came to a stop, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A big-rig driven by Mike Rosales, 46, of Corona, going between 50-55 mph hit the Jeep, sending it into the median, the CHP said.

The big-rig then jack-knifed and skidded to the right side of the freeway, slamming into a 1929 Ford driven by Giannulli. The big-rig then struck a CHP cruiser and a 2007 Chrysler stopped on the right shoulder.

Rosales suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
The driver of the Chrysler, Danielle Jones, 22, of Tustin, was transported to Hoag Hospital Irvine with moderate injuries.
The CHP officer was not hurt.
