7-year-old critical after hit-and-run crash

DANA POINT – Family members of an injured 7-year-old girl and investigators of a suspected hit-and-run accident are asking for witnesses, or the driver, to come forward to explain how the crash occurred.

As of Wednesday morning, the child remains hospitalized and in critical condition, and family members are awaiting word to find out if she will need additional surgery, said Jim Amormino, spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

The unidentified girl was playing in front of her Dana Point home Monday evening when she was hit by a light-colored vehicle, authorities said. The girl’s 6-year-old playmate ran to tell her family, who then drove the girl to a hospital.

The crash happened between 6:30 and 6:45 p.m. near Silver Lantern Street and La Paz Avenue, Amormino said.

The car was described as a possibly raised “military-style” vehicle or a pickup with a blue stripe.

After hitting the girl, the driver fled the area, he said.

Authorities are hoping that witnesses, or the driver, may come forward about the crash.

“Right now, we just want to talk to him,” Amormino said.
