Boney James injured after Newport Beach fest
Grammy-nominated jazz saxophonist Boney James was struck Saturday by a suspected drunken driver in Long Beach, according to The Associated Press.
His publicists say James was driving home after his appearance at the three-day Newport Beach Jazz Festival at the Hyatt Regency when his car was rear-ended while he was stopped in traffic on the I-405. He reportedly suffered a fractured jaw, two broken teeth and a gash on his chin that needed 14 stitches. Passersby pulled him from the car.
James, 48, has been released from the hospital but has canceled a Friday show in Columbia, S.C. According to Pollstar, the next scheduled Southern California date from the three-time Grammy nominee and Soul Train Award winner (for best jazz album) is a mid-August performance at the Long Beach Jazz Festival at Rainbow Lagoon Park.
His latest album, Send One Your Love, is one of last years most successful jazz releases, having spent eight weeks atop Billboards contemporary jazz chart.
