Boy, 12, hit by truck
A 12-year-old boy suffered internal injuries and fractures to both thighs yesterday when he was hit by a full-size Chevy truck while crossing a street in Yucaipa on his way to school, according to fire officials.
The accident happened at 7:30 a.m. Thursday in a crosswalk along Oak Glen Road near Yucaipa Regional Park. The impact hurled the boy nearly 50 feet, said paramedic Nate Boucher, spokesman for Loma Linda Fire Department.
The accident was witnessed by members of five fire engine crews who were returning to camp at the park after working to help extinguish the 1,159-acre Oak Glen Fire. Fire fighters tended to the boy and summoned additional help.
The child was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center where he was in critical condition.
