Car kills cyclist during event
A driver struck and killed a 45-year-old cyclist on Pacific Coast Highway about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, L.A. County sheriff’s deputies said.
The victim, Rodrigo Armas, was among dozens of cyclists trying to complete an ultra- endurance event of 200 miles that started Saturday morning. His 14-year-old son was also hit and suffered several broken bones.
The driver, identified by police as Robert Sam Sanchez, 30, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence, officials said.
They said Sanchez was found a short distance from the scene after abandoning his vehicle.
