CHP: 87-year-old woman in crash had no license

“The woman may have triggered a near-head-on collision when she turned in front of a BMW, according to the CHP.”

An 87-year-old woman driving without a license may have triggered a near-head-on collision this morning when she turned in front of an oncoming BMW, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The BMW slammed into the front passenger side of her Dodge Caravan.

The driver of the BMW said he was not badly hurt, but the 87-year-old woman was taken away in an ambulance. The extent of her injuries was not immediately known.

The woman has not had a driver’s license since 2002, Officer Alvin Yamaguchi said.

She was driving west on 17th Street and made a left turn toward Holt Avenue. The BMW was coming east on 17th Street and slammed into her van around 9 a.m.

The driver of the BMW, Bill Daniels of North Tustin, said he didn’t even have time to hit the brakes. He estimated that he was going about 40 mph when he saw “this big white blur right in front of me.”
The collision wrecked his 2008 BMW, but he said he had “just a little stiffness… I’m sure I’ll be sore tomorrow.”

“I’ll tell you something,” he added, “that’s a good ad for BMW.”

The collision blocked lanes at the busy intersection.
