Christmas tree surfing’ teen sustains head injury

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department is investigating an accident in which a teenager was injured while riding on top of a Christmas tree being dragged by a car.

It appears to be a local example of “Christmas tree surfing,” a potentially dangerous fad that has been chronicled on YouTube.

The accident occurred Sunday night in San Clemente. The 18-year-old and another person were atop Christmas trees being pulled by a car when the vehicle turned. The victim slammed into a parked car.

Jim Amormino, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Department, told KTLA News that it’s unclear whether the riders were standing or sitting on the tree.

The teen was taken to Mission Hospital with wounds to his head. He’s expected to recover. The driver fled the scene.

Amormino told the Orange County Register that the Sheriff’s Department had seen incidents of people riding on top of moving vehicles or being pulled on a skateboard. But this was the first case of Christmas tree surfing he could recall in Orange County.
