Construction workers hit gas line, get burned
Two construction workers were injured Monday when they were digging and hit a natural gas line and an electrical line, causing a fire, a fire official said.
The fire was reported at 11:25 a.m. at 20072 Cypress St., where workers were doing work at a residential lot, said Newport Beach Fire Department spokeswoman Jennifer Schulz.
Firefighters arrived to find flames shooting 15 feet into the air, Schulz said.
The workers suffered mild to moderate injuries and were taken to Western Medical Center Santa Ana, Schulz said.
The Gas Company and Southern California Edison crews assisted in sealing the gas leak.
About 20 people and their pets were evacuated while the leak was fixed and the fire was extinguished.
The fire was under control at 1:45 p.m. with the help of 13 firefighters, Schulz said.
Newport Beach police were called to assist.
