Girl’s Hooded Sweatshirts Recalled by Ely and Walker Due to Strangulation Hazard


“U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Recall”

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.
Name of Product: Cumberland Outfitters Girl’s Hooded Sweatshirts

Units: About 580

Distributor: Ely and Walker, of Lebanon, Tenn.

Hazard: The sweatshirts have a drawstring through the hood which can pose a strangulation hazard to children. In February 1996, CPSC issued guidelines (pdf) to help prevent children from strangling or getting entangled on the neck and waist drawstrings in upper garments, such as jackets or sweatshirts.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported.

Description: This recall involves Cumberland Outfitters girl’s hooded sweatshirts with drawstrings. The sweatshirts were sold in four colors (melon, white, purple, and turquoise) and in sizes XS to L. Graphic designs such as a horse, vine or flower are printed on the front and back of the sweatshirts. RN number 14119 and one of the following style numbers are printed on the care label: 561560EC, 561565CO, 561570RA and 561575TU.

Sold at: Department and apparel retail stores nationwide from April 2007 through April 2009 for between $19 and $24.

Manufactured in: India

Remedy: Consumers should immediately remove the drawstrings from the sweatshirts to eliminate the hazard. Consumers can also return the garment to either the place of purchase or to Ely and Walker for a full refund.
