Head-on collision kills one, ties up traffic

A head-on traffic collision killed a motorist and tied up traffic for more than three hours this morning along Highway 58 in the Barstow-area community of Hinkley, according to the California Highway Patrol.

“The Jaws of Life were needed … to extricate the victim,” Officer Steve Cuevas said of the 12:21 a.m. wreck between a Ford Taurus and a red Dodge pickup truck that was towing a trailer.

Lane closures required a flagman to direct traffic around the Hinkley Road accident scene until 3:52 a.m., according to the CHP website. The victim’s name has not been released.
