Hit-run driver flees after injuring motorist in Downey
A motorist was injured early this morning when a hit-and-run driver crashed into his car on the Century (105) Freeway in Downey, then fled on foot, prompting a ground and air search, authorities said.
The two-car crash on the eastbound Century Freeway at Lakewood Boulevard, near a Metro station, was reported about 12:45 a.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Joe Zizi told an On Scene Video camera crew.
A man who had been driving a compact was taken to St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood with moderate to critical injuries, Zizi said.
The hit-and-run driver was a man who had been behind the wheel of a Chrysler PT Cruiser and who fled following the collision, running toward the Metro station, Zizi said.
His female passenger, who remained inside the vehicle, was not hurt, but the suspect left traces of blood in the car apparently from an injury suffered in the crash, the officer added.
The area was searched by CHP officers and sheriff’s deputies assisted by Sheriff’s Department helicopter crew, On Scene reported. No arrests were immediately made, Zizi said.
Anyone with information on the accident was asked to call the CHP’s Santa Fe Springs office at (562) 868-0503.
