Italy Orders Confiscation of Ancient Getty Bronze
An Italian court ordered the confiscation an ancient Greek bronze statue known as the “Victorious Youth” that is now at the J. Paul Getty Museum’s Getty Villa in Malibu, Ansa news wire reported citing a 37-page court order.
The bronze was found in the sea off the coast of Italy in 1964 and prosecutors allege that it was smuggled out of the country, Ansa said. The statue of an athlete, which the Getty bought in 1977, “is one of the few life-size Greek bronzes to have survived,” the Getty says on its Web site.
“The Roman ship carrying it to Italy may have foundered off the coast, preserving the statue for centuries in the sea,” the Getty says.
