Man charged in fatal 100-mph DUI crash
A Ladera Ranch man has been indicted by a grand jury in the death of a motorist on the 73 toll road, authorities said.
According to prosecutors, Richard Ernest Caselli, 37, was driving at speeds exceeding 100 mph on the toll road when he crashed into an SUV on Oct. 16, 2009. The impact of the crash ejected the driver of the SUV, and Caselli showed signs that he had been drinking, authorities said
Caselli is scheduled to be arraigned Friday. If convicted of felony vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence while intoxicated, he faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
Prosecutors allege that Caselli was just north of Laguna Canyon Road when he lost control of his car and crashed into an SUV being driven by Brook Boynton. The vehicle spun out of control and Boynton was thrown out of the vehicle.
When authorities spoke to Caselli, he showed signs of intoxication, such as bloodshot and watery eyes, slurred speech and smelled of alcohol, police said.
Caselli is free on $150,000 bail.
