Man in wheelchair struck, killed in Bellflower
ELLFLOWER – A man in a motorized wheelchair was fatally struck by a sport utility vehicle as he was crossing a street in Bellflower, authorities said today.
The accident occurred as the victim was crossing Artesia Boulevard near Coke Avenue about 9 p.m. Tuesday, according to a watch sergeant at the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department’s Lakewood Station.
The man had just rolled out onto Artesia Boulevard between two parked cars when he was struck by an oncoming sport utility vehicle, sheriff’s Deputy Chris Bronowiski told an On Scene Video camera crew.
“There was substantial contact, and the victim was thrown” from his wheelchair, the sergeant added.
The man was declared dead at Lakewood Regional Medical Center, Bronowiski said. His name was withheld pending family notification.
The sergeant said the woman driving the SUV remained at the scene and was being questioned by deputies. An initial report indicated the man’s death was “simply an accident,” he added.
