Man was speeding before head-on crash, police say
“Truck sideswiped another truck, then hit wall in Fountain Valley.”
A 62-year-old Huntington Beach man was taken to the hospital in critical condition after he veered into oncoming traffic and hit a truck Thursday afternoon, police said.
Baron L. Mahling was speeding in a gold 1996 Chevrolet Silverado eastbound on Ellis Avenue around 1:45 p.m. when he veered into opposing traffic just west of Bushard Street and hit a black 1998 Nissan Frontier truck driven by Todd B. Gruca, 31, of Fountain Valley, police said.
The Silverado continued across the street, jumping the curb, shearing off a power pole, and hitting a block wall. Mahling suffered major head and chest injuries and remains unconscious at a hospital, Fountain Valley police said.
Gruca was treated for minor injuries at the scene.
The preliminary investigation found Mahling was at fault for crossing into oncoming traffic at high speed, according to police.
