Mother being investigated for leaving child in car while shopping
Child Protective Services is investigating the case of a 45-year-old woman who left her 4-year-old daughter in a Range Rover while she went shopping on Monday.
Jacki Lynn Iskander left her daughter, who police initially reported as being 3 years old, in her white Range Rover watching a movie. The windows of the vehicle were rolled up and the doors were locked, sheriff’s Deputy Darren Sandberg said. The car was not running, he said.
Sandberg said the child had been watching a movie in the car while the mother shopped at Nordstrom, Sandberg said.
A witness, who talked to the child through the window, called police at 12:05 p.m. A deputy responded to the scene at 12:12 p.m., two minutes after the mother had returned to the car.
The temperature in the city at 12:07 p.m. was 81 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
Sandberg said the deputy didn’t think taking the 4 year old from her mother was the right thing to do in the situation, but the deputy did contact Child Protective Services.
Sandberg said the case would be submitted to the Orange County District Attorney’s office, which would determine whether to file charges.
