Motorist choking on soda crashes into tree
SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO A man reportedly lost consciousness briefly after choking on soda while driving on Ortega Highway this morning, just east of Antonio Parkway.
The choking apparently caused him to crash the vehicle into a tree, a California Highway Patrol officer said.
At 10:15 a.m., CHP officers responded to the unincorporated area to a report that a red compact car — a Subaru — drove off the roadway and crashed through a wire fence before slamming into a tree.
CHP officer Jared Stapleton, who was at the scene, said the man was injured with an apparent broken collarbone and cuts and scrapes .
The man was taken to Mission Hospital.
