An 88-year-old man was arrested after police said he shot and killed his wife, 86, in her room at a nursing home on Sunday afternoon.
Seal Beach police Sgt. Steve Bowles said officers responded to a call of shots fired at the Country Villa Healthcare Center at 3000 Beverly Manor Road at 12:07 p.m.
Officers arrived at the scene three minutes later and cordoned off the building with assistance from the Los Alamitos and Cypress police departments, the California Highway Patrol and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
Bowles said officers found Clara Laird dead in her room from a single gunshot wound to the head. Her husband, Roy Charles Laird, was sitting in the room and was taken into custody without further incident.
He was booked into Seal Beach jail on suspicion of murder, authorities said. A revolver believed to be the murder weapon was recovered from the scene.
“It was a quite chaotic on a Sunday afternoon, with people visiting family members, as well as the normal staff,” Bowles said.
Bowles said privacy laws kept him from talking about the woman’s health.
Kathy Terry, a relative of a staff member, drove from her home in Mission Viejo to make sure her daughter was unhurt. When Terry arrived, Laird had already been taken into custody.
“Things like this happening is crazy,” Terry said. “He could have went in there and shot up the place.”
