Two young boys die in fire
Two young brothers died this morning in their bedroom during a three-alarm blaze that sent their grandfather and a 1-year-old girl to the hospital, according to Rialto Fire Department officials.
“They were found in an added-on bedroom … (in) the garage,” department spokesman Matt Payne said of the deceased chiildren, ages 4 and 5. “The converted bedroom has heavy smoke damage — a lot of heat and smoke.”
Flames were reported at 12:05 a.m. along the 1400 block of North Lillac Avenue near Base Line. It took 18 fire crews about 30 minutes to search the house and knock down the flames.
The fire apparently started on the north side of the house, where there are a couple of bedrooms, Payne said. The cause wasn’t immediately determined. Fire investigators and some crews remain at the scene.
The single-family house is home to seven adults and four children, Payne said.
But when the fire errupted, the building was occupied by two adults and three children: a 54-year-old man, his wife, their two grandsons and an unrelated 1-year-old girl, Payne said.
The grandfather suffered second-degree burns to his arms and is in stable condition at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton. The 1-year-old girl suffered smoke inhalation and is being treated at the same hospital.
The grandmother escaped uninjured.
