UCI Grad Student Charged In His Ex-Wife’s Murder
“Rebecca Benedict Was Shot To Death On Campus”
A 35-year-old U.C. Irvine graduate student was charged Tuesday in the murder of his wife, who was shot to death on campus.
Brian Hughes Benedict was scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday afternoon in Newport Beach.
He faces up to 50 years to life in prison if convicted, according to Farrah Emami, a spokeswoman for the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.
Benedict’s ex-wife, Rebecca, went to his campus apartment to pick up their 4-year-old son about 7 p.m. Sunday. She had recently won custody of her son and he was ordered to pay child support.
Benedict grew angry when she arrived and swung a hammer at her, which prompted her to run away, Emami said.
He chased her with a gun and shot at her several times, hitting her at least once, Emami said.
He then ran back to his apartment, got his son and tried to put him in his car, but witnesses and neighbors restrained him until authorities arrived, Emami said.
