Wheelchair-bound man struck by pickup
A man in a wheelchair is hospitalized after being struck by a pickup truck at a Yucaipa intersection.
At just after 4 p.m. today, a 43-year-old man was crossing 11th Street at Yucaipa Boulevard in a motorized wheelchair when he was struck by a full-size Chevrolet pickup driven by a 16-year-old boy, said San Bernardino County sheriff’s Sgt. Don Mahoney.
Witnesses told members of the sheriff’s Major Accident Investigation Team that the pickup was traveling at between 35 and 40 mph, which is normal for that stretch of road, Mahoney said.
“It looks like he just didn’t see him,” Mahoney said of the driver. He said skid marks suggest the driver tried to stop.
The victim was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center, where he was still alive as of 8 p.m., said Mahoney, who did not know anything more about his condition.
