Woman badly hurt in 3-vehicle crash

COSTA MESA A crash involving three vehicles left a 23-year-old pedestrian in critical condition, police said.
The crash was reported at approximately 7:50 a.m. at Sunflower and Stevens avenues, said Sgt. Zack Hoferitza of the Costa Mesa Police Department.
According to a preliminary investigation, a 17-year-old male was driving westbound on Sunflower Avenue, ran a red light at Stevens Avenue, and then struck two vehicles one traveling northbound on Stevens and the other traveling southbound on Stevens, said Costa Mesa police Sgt. David Makiyama.
As a result of the crash, the 23-year-old woman, who was standing on the northwest corner of the intersection, was struck by flying debris from the vehicles, Makiyama said.
The woman suffered a severe head injury and was taken to a hospital, Makiyama said. The three drivers were not injured.
The 17-year-old driver was not cited at the scene, Makiyama said.
The crash is still under investigation. Witnesses are asked to call 714-754-5264.
