Woman lies in street, run over, killed
An unidentified woman apparently lay down in the middle of Blaine Street yesterday just before she was run over and killed, Riverside police said.
Witnesses told police the woman was yelling and acting upset when she walked into the road, took off her jacket and hat and lay down in the street. The driver of the car didn’t have enough time to avoid hitting her, Lt. Chuck Griffitts said in a written statement.
The woman was hit just after 1 p.m. She was taken by ambulance to Riverside Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead 45 minutes later.
The woman, who police have been unable to identify, was white and looked to be in her 50s or 60s, Griffitts said.
No charges are expected against the driver, a man who police declined to identify.
“Clearly, this is one of those tragic situations where the driver of the car had no chance of stopping and avoiding the woman, through no fault of his own,” Griffitts said.
