Woman who crashed BMW into gas station dies
“Speed and alcohol are suspected factors in Thursday night crash, police said.”
ORANGE A 21-year-old woman who crashed her BMW into two concrete posts at a Chevron gas station has died as a result of her injuries, police said.
Sandra Mariana Velasquez Gonzalez, of Orange, died Friday afternoon at UCI Medical Center in Orange, said Orange police Sgt. Dan Adams.
Police suspect speed and alcohol played a factor in the accident, which occurred at 11:30 p.m. Thursday when Velasquez lost control of her BMW, Adams said.
Velasquez was apparently speeding southbound on Main Street when she failed to negotiate a bend on the street, just before Chapman Avenue. The BMW continued straight and traveled into the northbound lanes before she jumped the curb at Main and Little Main streets, police said.
The vehicle then skidded through the parking lot of the Chevron gas station at 1405 W. Chapman Ave. and struck concrete bollards, set up to protect the gasoline pumps.
“If the bollards weren’t there, there is a chance she would have caused a large explosion,” Adams said.
Velasquez was extricated from her BMW and taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange in critical condition. She died the next day.
The investigation is ongoing.
