Man suspected of dumping girlfriend’s body in Anaheim dumpster arrested at LAX
Police investigating the murder of a woman whose body was found in a dumpster in Anaheim arrested the man she had been dating as he was waiting to board a flight to Germany on Wednesday, Oct. 31.
Police took Amer Alhasan, 28, of La Habra, into custody at LAX late Wednesday afternoon, according to Anaheim Police Sgt. Daron Wyatt. He said the suspect had already checked in for his flight in an apparent attempt to escape the jurisdiction of local law enforcement.
“If we were about two to three hours later, he would have been out of the country,” he said.
Alhasan was wanted on suspicion of killing Tyanie Ly, 38, of Santa Ana, then stuffing her body in a duffel bag that was left in a dumpster on the 2100 block of Balboa Plaza on or before Tuesday, Oct. 30. Police said the location of the discovery was unrelated to the killing itself.
Ly was the mother of three young children, according to Wyatt. He said investigators believe she and the suspect were dating at the time of her death, but it was unclear to authorities how long they had been together or how they met.
Wyatt said family members who had seen media coverage of the homicide contacted police Tuesday and helped officers identify the victim in about a day. Detectives recognized Alhasan as a suspect shortly thereafter and worked quickly to arrest him before he was able to leave the United States.
The Department of Homeland Security, as well as US Customs and Border Protection assisted Homicide Detectives in the case, according to Anaheim Police Chief Jorge Cisneros.
“Our homicide detectives, assisted by our crime Task Force Special Investigations Unit, and our Criminal Intelligence Unit, have worked literally around the clock to bring justice to Tyanie’s family,” he said.
Investigators have asked anyone who might know anything about the suspect’s dating history to contact OC Crimestoppers at 855-TIP-OCCS or www.occrimestoppers.org.
Alhasan was deemed a flight risk and held on $5 million bail, according to Wyatt. He said prosecutors were expected to file first degree murder and other charges against him at his arraignment scheduled for Friday.
