A man was dead after he was struck by a vehicle while standing in traffic in Santa Ana Friday night, Jan. 18, authorities said.

Just before 10:45 p.m., Santa Ana officers received a call of an accident involving a vehicle and a pedestrian near the intersection of Warner Avenue and Wright Street, police said.

When they arrived, officers found the man lying in the roadway. Orange County paramedics responded and treated the man on scene, but he was pronounced dead, police said.

Officers learned the man was standing in the eastbound lanes of Warner Avenue east of Wright Street when he was hit by the vehicle, which was headed eastbound on Warner Avenue, police said.

The driver, who was not believed to be driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, remained on scene and was cooperating.

It was unknown why the pedestrian was standing in traffic lanes and authorities said a forensic toxicology analysis will be performed as part of the Coroner’s Office autopsy to determine the pedestrian’s sobriety.

Further details about the pedestrian were not immediately available.

The Santa Ana Police Department’s Collision Investigation Unit was handling the investigation.
