Wrong-way van driver killed in head-on collision with pickup truck in Santa Ana

A van headed the wrong way on a Santa Ana street crashed head-on into a pickup truck on Sunday, Feb. 10, leaving the van driver dead.

Preliminary evidence suggests a white Toyota van was traveling west in eastbound lanes of Warner Avenue before colliding with a Gold Toyota Tundra pickup near Oak Street at about 5:30 a.m., according to a Santa Ana Police Department news release. The two vehicles had major front-end damage. Emergency responders rescued the two drivers and took them to Orange County Global Medical Center.

Paramedics rushed the female driver of the van to surgery, but she was later pronounced dead at the hospital, according to the release. She was not immediately identified by authorities.

Investigators suspect alcohol may have played a role in the collision but did not elaborate.

The 62-year-old Santa Ana man who was driving the truck sustained moderate injuries, police said. There were no other passengers involved or injuries reported in the incident.
