4 victims in fatal DUI crash in Santa Ana are identified
The four people killed in a two-vehicle crash Sunday morning have been identified.
The crash in Santa Ana, was caused by an alleged drunken driver, authorities have said.
The four people killed were in a pickup truck struck by the suspect’s vehicle. They were identified by the Santa Ana Police Department as Jose Alberto Avila-Rosas, 23, of Santa Ana; Ziomara Zaragoza, 23, of Garden Grove; Antonio Alonso Santibanez, 23, of Orange; and Prisma Yuliana Montoya, 34, of Santa Ana.
Avila-Rosas was driving the white Chevrolet Silverado southbound on Tustin Avenue in Santa Ana when the vehicle was broadsided by a black Jeep Wrangler, traveling westbound on Fourth Street, after the driver of the Jeep ran a red light, police said.
The driver of the Jeep, 28-year-old Vincent Michael Calvo of Buena Park, was found next to the Jeep in the roadway. He suffered minor injuries in the crash and was hospitalized and placed in police custody.
The crash occurred at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday, police said.
The collision caused both vehicles to roll over several times, police said. A call to police said the four people in the truck were trapped inside and the vehicle was catching fire, police said.
The four were pronounced dead at the scene, Santa Ana Police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.
Calvo was arrested on suspicion of four counts of murder and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs causing great bodily injury or death, Bertagna said.
Investigators obtained surveillance video showing the black Jeep failing to stop at a red light before entering the intersection and colliding with the truck, police said.
An off-duty firefighter in the area at the time of the crash with his wife, an off-duty nurse, stopped to help. The firefighter put out the fire, Bertagna said.
Calvo was being held in jail in lieu of $4 million bail.
