Man wanted on suspicion of assault with deadly weapon in Mission Viejo arrested after barricading himself inside home
A man wanted on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon was taken into custody nearly three hours after he barricaded himself inside a Mission Viejo home on Saturday, March 30, authorities said.
Just after 3 p.m., Orange County Sheriff’s Department deputies arrested the man in the backyard of the home on the 26700 block of Valpariso Drive in Mission Viejo after he stepped outside, department spokeswoman Carrie Braun said.
Deputies were called to the home about 12:15 p.m. on reports of an assault with a deadly weapon and found out that a tenant had struck the homeowner – an elderly woman – over the head with a blunt object before she was able to escape, Braun said.
The suspect did not immediately comply with deputies’ commands to exit the home and, instead taunted them, officials said. People were asked to avoid the area.
SWAT and a Crisis Negotiation Team were on scene to assist, Braun said. It wasn’t immediately known if the suspect had weapons inside the home with him, she said.
There is currently a large police presence on Valpariso Drive reference a barricaded suspect. More information to follow. Please stay away from the area. https://t.co/htDAE1oNgk
