Man arrested on suspicion of sexual assault in Garden Grove after victim’s family detains him

A 33-year-old man, who police said was homeless, was arrested early Friday on suspicion of sexual assaulting an elderly woman.

The Garden Grove Police department said officers responded to the 8500 block of Lampson Avenue at around 1:35 a.m. after a call about a sexual assault in progress.

On arrival, police found a man who was detained by several family members of the victim, officials said. He was detained after a family member heard noises coming from the 87-year-old’s room and went to investigate.

Police said the family member saw the man sexually assaulting the woman and yelled for help. The man tried to leave and fight family members, but was ultimately detained in the backyard.

The suspect’s identity was not immediately released, but officials said he is homeless and not known by either the victim or the family.
