Santa Ana police seek hit-and-run driver who collided with wheelchair, leaving victim dying in roadway

Santa Ana police are seeking the driver of a dark Toyota Camry that collided with a pedestrian in a wheelchair on Friday night.

The collision occurred at about 10:37 p.m. near the intersection of 1st and Townsend streets.

The person was left lying the roadway with a faint pulse and shallow breathing, according to police. After “all signs of life ceased,” CPR was administered and the pedestrian was transported to a hospital in “extremely” critical condition, a news release stated.

The preliminary investigation showed the wheelchair was crossing 1st Street southbound in a marked crosswalk when he was struck by a vehicle, headed east.

“Following the collision, the vehicle failed to stop and continued east on 1st.  The outstanding vehicle is believed to be a black or dark colored Toyota Camry that should have extensive damage to its front end,” the release said.
