Rowland Heights brush fire contained, evacuations lifted
Dozens of firefighters and two helicopters rushed to combat a brush fire in Rowland Heights on Sunday, June 30; and some homes were temporarily evacuated as a precaution.
The blaze was first spotted at about 5 p.m. near the intersection of Old Ranch Ravine Road and Desire Avenue, Los Angeles County Fire Department Dispatch Supervisor Michael Pittman said.
It was originally reported as a small spot fire, but at some point it made contact with several piles of mulch at a nearby nursery and grew, Pittman said. It scorched at least two acres before it was contained at about 7 p.m., Dispatch Supervisor Miguel Ornelas said.
About 150 firefighters and two helicopters were dispatched to deal with the blaze, Pittman said.
No injuries were reported, and no structures were at risk, Pittman said.
However, about 40 residents living in about five homes on Desire Avenue between Pathfinder and Colima roads were told to evacuate, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Nicole Davis said. They were able to return to their homes by 8:30 p.m.
There was no immediate information on what may have caused the fire.
