After trying to carjack a Pizza Hut delivery driver, suspect barricades himself in Santa Ana home for hours until giving up
Accused of trying to carjack a Pizza Hut delivery driver, a suspect was taken into custody Wednesday morning after barricading himself for hours in a Santa Ana home.
At about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Santa Ana police responded to reports that a suspect had tried to rob and carjack a Pizza Hut delivery driver, Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.
The suspect pistol-whipped the victim and then ran when, near a Chevron gas station on South Bristol Street, he spotted the police, the corporal said.
“He ran into the neighborhood, went over several fences and eventually went into the home,” Bertagna said.
There was a family inside the home in the 3200 block of South Street near Bear Street.
The suspect confronted a man inside the house, who called police.
Officers were able to get the man and his family out of the home but the suspect refused to leave, Bertagna said.
Hostage negotiators responded. A robot was sent into the house. Negotiators threw a phone into the house to try to communicate with the suspect, but he did not respond.
At about 4 a.m. Wednesday, SWAT members fired flash-bang grenades into the home.
Before 7 a.m., the suspect surrendered and was arrested.
