Man in green wig leads CHP on pursuit from Orange County to the sand of Venice Beach

A man wearing a green wig and a clown mask took the California Highway Patrol on a pursuit from Orange County to the sand of Venice Beach, where he playfully helped bury a man and then laid down as officers approached for his arrest.

Along the way, before hopping out of his car on Venice Boulevard, the man climbed through the sun roof and sat atop the car while a passenger apparently helped him drive slowly along a street.

The pursuit began about 2:50 p.m. on the northbound 405 Freeway when CHP officers noticed a sedan driven recklessly, CHP Officer Stephan Brandt said.

The car continued north, slowing for traffic, until transitioning to the 90 Freeway, then getting off at Lincoln Boulevard and proceeding to the boardwalk.

He walked on the sand as beachgoers looked on. He stopped to help a man who was covering another man with sand and gave a high five.

Many on the beach began following the suspect until he got to the water’s edge, and they surrounded him while Los Angeles police and CHP officers closed in.

People stood nearby, off to the sides, while police officers drew weapons and CHP officers prepared to use a Taser on him.

At about 3:45 p.m., the suspect removed his shirt and dropped his colorful jacket before kneeling on the sand, then lying down for the arrest.

Only the man with the green wig was arrested, Brandt said. The passenger apparently remained in the car and did not face arrest, he said.
