Officer injured, 5 arrested in alochol-related incident near Huntington Beach Pier
Five people were arrested and multiple Huntington Beach police officers were injured when a large fight broke out after officers approached a woman who was caught drinking on the beach, authorities said on Thursday.
The officers spotted the woman imbibing, which is against a city law, near Tower 11, Huntington Beach Sgt. Jason Melschau said.
As the officers talked to her, several of the people she was with attacked the officers, police said.
Officers called for backup, and a large fight broke out.
Five people were arrested and multiple officers had minor injuries, Melschau said. One officer was sent to the hospital but expected to make a full recovery.
Details about what types of injuries the officers had were not immediately available.
Police didn’t immediately identify those arrested or say what charges they may face but did say the incident remained under investigation.
The Vans U.S. Open of Surfing is taking place in Huntington Beach, but Melschau said the arrests were unrelated to the event.
Police reminded beach-goers on social media that there is no tolerance for alcohol on the city beach.
Police asked that anyone with information about the incident call their tip line at 714-375-5066.
