Fire damages church in Anaheim Hills Sunday morning
Some Anaheim Hills residents attending church got a brief scare Sunday morning when a fire started in the building housing the church’s offices and classrooms.
About 185 people were on the campus of Canyon Hills Presbyterian Church when smoke and flames were seen coming from the roof of an outbuilding near the church’s parking lot.
There were parishioners in the parking lot or inside the church’s sanctuary when the fire started.
Sgt. Daron Wyatt of the Anaheim Police Department said fire officials received the call about the church fire at around 10:18 a.m.
At least 45 city and Orange County firefighters, as well as some from Orange, responded and started trying to get the fire under control. Wyatt said it took about 30 minutes for firefighters to knock down the fire.
Firefighters could be seen on the building’s second floor, dragging hose lines to windows and doors that showed smoke damage.
Wyatt said many church members remained on campus while firefighters attacked the flames.
It’s not clear if the church’s Sunday morning sermon was interrupted, but the Canyon Hills website shows the sermon is typically held at 10 a.m.
Wyatt said there was extensive damage to the second story of the building. But there were no injuries — no one was inside that building when the fire started.
About an hour after the fire was put down, parts of Fairmont Boulevard were reopened to traffic. But church members were stuck on the Canyon Hills campus until firefighters could move their vehicles, Wyatt said.
