1 student hospitalized, 1 arrested after fight at Corona del Mar High School
An on-campus fight between two students at Corona del Mar Middle & High School left one in the hospital and the other arrested, authorities said on Friday.
The fight happened after school on Thursday, Sept. 26, said Annette Franco, a spokeswoman for the Newport-Mesa Unified School District. A 14-year-old boy and another boy, in the seventh grade, were involved, said Heather Rangel of the Newport Beach Police Department.
At one point during the altercation, the seventh-grader was shoved backward and hit his head on the concrete, according to Rangel.
The seventh-grader was hospitalized, and the 14-year-old was arrested on suspicion of battery with intent to cause great bodily injury, she said.
The mother of the seventh-grader told CBS2 that her son suffered head fractures and that he did not know his accused attacker or what provoked the fight.
District and school officials were working to determine disciplinary action for the 14-year-old boy.
“Our schools respond as quickly as possible to any issues on our campuses,” the district said in a statement.
The incident comes on the heels of a fight at Landmark Middle School in Moreno Valley in which a 13-year-old boy died of his injuries in a hospital nine days after he was attacked by two classmates.
