Motorcyclist critically injured after colliding with SUV in Costa Mesa

A man remained hospitalized in critical condition Tuesday evening after his motorcycle collided with an SUV in Costa Mesa, authorities said.

The man rode his motorcycle north on South Coast Drive when a Toyota 4-Runner SUV traveling the opposite way on the road turned left into Carmel Drive, said Costa Mesa police Lt. Victor Bakkila. As the SUV made its left turn, the motorcycle rammed into the side of the truck.

Paramedics transported the motorcyclist to Orange County Global Medical Center in critical condition at 5:19 p.m.

No additional injuries were reported.

A portion of South Coast Drive from Wimbledon Way to San Leandro Lane remained blocked while traffic investigators assessed the scene of the crash, Bakkila said.

DUI was not suspected in the collision.
