Suspect in custody after Costa Mesa standoff

by in News

Gunfire was reported in Costa Mesa while officers were engaged in a standoff with a reportedly armed person in distress on New Year’s Eve, Tuesday, Dec. 31. The suspect was later taken into custody.

Officers were dispatched to the area of Orange Avenue and Knox Place and encountered a person described as troubled and believed to be in possession of a firearm, Costa Mesa Police Lt. Stephanie Selinske said. Shots were heard in the area of Orange Avenue and Knox Street at about 3:41 p.m.

Authorities blocked off nearby streets and told people to stay away from the area, Selinske said. Some residents were evacuated.

The suspect was later taken into custody, CMPD officials said in a news release published at 7:03 p.m. His identity was not immediately released.

Authorities did not believe there was any lingering threat to the public following the arrest. No injuries were reported.

A woman speaking at the scene of the incident told reporters she drove home and was confronted by an armed man when she pulled into her driveway, KCBS-TV reported. She said the man commanded her to leave and fired at least one shot through her windshield.

Police were not immediately able to verify that account, Selinske said.
