Southern California heat to continue until weekend

by in News

It was unusually hot across the region on Wednesday – and hot temperatures are expected to continue at least until this weekend.

Most of Southern California has been facing temperatures in the 80s and 90s – 20 degrees above the normal high for this time of year.

That was to continue on Thursday, May 7, although with a dip along the coast in Los Angeles and Orange counties.

In Ontario, the normal high is 77 – but Wednesday afternoon brought with it 97 degrees, said James Brotherton, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

“On Saturday, it’ll be 90, so it cools off five degrees, and Sunday it cools off another five degrees,” Brotherton said.

Those drops will be similar in the Inland Empire and in Orange County.

“At night, we’re cooling down into the 60s, which provides a lot of relief, so we’re lucky,” Brotherton said. “Next week, with that cool down, those cool temperatures could be in the 40s in the Inland Empire on Monday night and Tuesday night.”

In Los Angeles County, temperatures will also drop somewhat dramatically on the weekend, said Ryan Kittel, another Weather Service meteorologist.

“Thankfully, (Thursday) should be the last day; we should get about a five-degree cool off by Friday,” he said. “On Sunday, temperatures should be back in the 70s. It’ll be dramatic cooling over the weekend and next week we’ll be where we normally are this time of the year.”

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, movie theaters and, to a point, beaches aren’t the usual options for staying cool.

On Wednesday, Long Beach resident A.J. Mada said he would have normally taken his husky, Snoop, to Rosie’s Dog Beach to cool down.

“My main focus is my dog; I don’t want him to get too hot,” said Mada, 29. “Normally, we’d be at the dog beach where it’s a little cooler for him.

So right now I have several fans set up for him in the living room.”
