Police arrest 9 in Fontana during protest over George Floyd’s death
A protest in Fontana Thursday night over the death of George Floyd swelled to 100 people and resulted in rocks thrown at business windows, officers and passing vehicles, police said.
Traffic was blocked on Sierra Avenue, and windows were broken at City Hall.
Floyd, a 46-year-old man from Minnesota, died on Monday after a Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck. Floyd’s death has sparked protests against police violence throughout the country.
In Fontana, protesters started gathering on Sierra, between Arrow Boulevard and Ceres Avenue, at around 6 p.m., according to reports from social media. The protesters carried signs saying “Black Lives Matter” or with Floyd’s name.
At first, the gathering was peaceful, with 40 to 50 people, police said.
But then the crowd grew to 100, and trouble broke out and police told the protesters they must disperse because it had become an unlawful assembly.
“But some members of the group instead chose to continue to block traffic on Upland Avenue and Sierra Avenue while throwing rocks at officers,” police said in a statement. “In the end, it took officers over an hour to disperse the crowd and nine subjects were arrested for various charges.”
