Ojai man identified as motorist killed in crash on 5 Freeway near Lake Forest, Laguna Hills border
Officials identified on Monday, June 22, a man who died in a chain-reaction crash on the 5 Freeway, near the border of Laguna Hills and Lake Forest over the weekend.
A BMW was traveling south, then stopped abruptly near El Toro Road at about 12:40 p.m. Saturday, California Highway Patrol Officials said in a news release. A Subaru following a Honda that was behind the BMW managed to slow down to avoid a collision. But a Ford then slammed into the Subaru.
The driver of the Subaru was taken to Mission Hospital, where he died as a result of his injuries. He was later identified as Randall King, 71, of Ojai, Orange County Deputy Coroner Kelley Keyes said.
Authorities do not believe drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. However, officials were still working to determine what caused the BMW to stop as of Monday evening. Authorities asked anyone with information regarding the collision to call CHP officers at 949-487-4000.
Initial reports suggesting that up to five vehicles and a person who wanted to jump into traffic were involved in the incident were based off of preliminary reports that were either under investigation as of Monday evening, or inconsistent with the facts gleaned by investigators. No pedestrian was killed in the crash, CHP officer Rafael Reynoso said.
