Woman gets 9 months in jail for 2018 Tustin crash that killed her brother and another teen
SANTA ANA — A 21-year-old woman who was behind the wheel of a speeding car that crashed in Tustin more than two years ago, killing her brother and another teenager, is scheduled to report to jail in September to serve a nine-month term, according to court records obtained Monday.
Josselyn Jazmine Anguiano of Santa Ana pleaded guilty July 2 to two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter and one count of child abuse and endangerment, all felonies. She also admitted an infraction for not using seatbelts.
Anguiano was ordered to report to jail Sept. 4 to serve a 270-day sentence and was also placed on five years of formal probation.
Sentencing enhancements for inflicting great bodily injury were dismissed as part of the plea deal.
The crash occurred about 2:50 a.m. on March 23, 2018, in the 16000 block of Legacy Road. Anguiano, then 18, lost control of the Infiniti M37 she was driving at about 75 mph in a 35 mph zone before attempting to make a turn, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.
The car hit a curb while going 47 mph before slamming into multiple poles and flipping on its side, prosecutors said.
The six passengers in the car were all students at Century High School in Santa Ana.
Killed in the crash were 17-year-old Pedro Fuentes and the defendant’s brother, 17-year-old Jason Anguiano. Two other passengers were injured, including one who suffered a broken jaw and another whose pelvis was fractured.
Anguiano’s attorney, Michael Ian Garey, said the crash was “an absolute tragedy all the way around,” and that his client is “a good kid, absolutely a good kid.” He declined to comment further.
