Fugitive wanted in Hawaii is arrested in Corona

by in News

A man wanted on drug charges in Hawaii was arrested in Corona on Thursday, Aug. 20, after a standoff in a busy shopping center parking lot.

Kameron Lawhead, 45, a resident of an unincorporated county area near Corona, was taken into custody outside the Walmart near the intersection of Ontario and California avenues, said Sgt. Shane Carringer, an Anaheim Police Department spokesman.

Anaheim police are part of the Orange County Violent Crime Task Force that includes the FBI. The FBI was asked by authorities in Kauai to arrest Lawhead, said Laura Eimiller, an FBI spokeswoman.

Officers located him about 12:15 p.m. A passenger in Lawhead’s pickup got out when he was ordered, but Lawhead initially ignored officers’ commands to exit, Carringer said. Police fired bean bags to break the pickup’s windows and then pepper balls that prompted Lawhead to get out, Carringer said.

Carringer added that social media rumors of a shootout were incorrect. No one was reported injured.

Officers found a loaded handgun, one kilogram of heroin and several thousand dollars in cash in the pickup, Carringer said. A search of Lawhead’s home yielded an assault rifle, high-capacity magazines and more than $50,000 in cash, Carringer said.
