2 dead in fiery crash in Santa Ana, street racing suspected
Two people were killed after the car they were traveling in crashed into a tree and burst into flames in Santa Ana on Saturday night, authorities said.
The car, headed north on Bear Street from MacArthur Boulevard, may have been involved in a street race with another vehicle, Santa Ana police said in a news release on Sunday.
Orange County Fire Authority firefighters responded to the 3200 block of Bear Street at Alton Avenue about 9:18 p.m. on a report of a single-vehicle crash. The firefighters found the vehicle fully engulfed, the release said.
Two people in the vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene. Information about the occupants, including age and gender, was not immediately available.
A preliminary investigation showed as the two vehicles passed through Alton Avenue, one of them lost control before striking a tree in the center median of Bear north of Alton. The other vehicle and its driver are still at large and unidentified, police said.
Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact the Santa Ana Police Department’s Traffic Division at (714) 245-8200.
