What we know about Mark Domingo, the man arrested on suspicion of plotting a terrorist attack in Southern California

Mark Steven Domingo, 26, was arrested on Friday evening, April 26, on suspicion of plotting to detonate an explosive at a rally in Long Beach, which was scheduled for this weekend but ultimately canceled. Authorities have said he sought to “commit mass murder” by planting a bomb at a rally at Bluff Park on Sunday, April 28, which counter-protest groups on social media said had ties to white nationalism. Domingo has been charged with providing and attempting to provide material support to terrorists.

This is everything we know about Domingo:

• Domingo lived in Reseda with his family, according to his brother, James Domingo, 22. He lived with his brother, aunt and grandmother, James Domingo said.
• James Domingo also said he was not aware if their parents knew his older brother had been arrested.
• David Israel Wasserman, Domingo’s public defender, said his client was estranged from some members of his family, but was apparently saving up all his money so that his brother could go to college.
• Wasserman argued in court Monday that Domingo was not a flight risk, and that he could be safely confined to his home while he awaited trial. But the judge ordered Domingo to remain in jail.
• Domingo served as an infantryman in the U.S. Army from November 2011 to February 2013, attaining the rank of private, said Lt. Col. Emanuel L. Ortiz. He deployed to Afghanistan from September 2012 to February 2013.
• Before Domingo’s deployment to Afghanistan, he was assigned to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, according to the FBI.
• Department of Justice officials, meanwhile, said they didn’t have information Monday about why Domingo left the military. FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said the Army investigated Domingo. Eimiller did not know Domingo’s discharge status, but did say his conduct — whatever it was — didn’t rise to the level where he would be dishonorably discharged.
• He may have been a student at Pierce College in Woodland Hills. There are records of a student by the name of Mark S. Domingo, whose birth date is Feb. 9, 1993, said Doreen Clay, the college’s spokeswoman. This person took classes at the college from summer 2013 through spring 2014, she said.
• Domingo converted to Islam late last year or early this year, according to his brother. It’s unclear from what religion he converted.
• His brother added that Domingo attended a mosque in Reseda that practices Sufism, a form of Islamic mysticism.
