Fire burns at Camp Pendleton ordnance field
Authorities allowed a fire at an ordnance field at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton to burn out naturally, sending plumes of smoke that were visible to motorists passing nearby on Wednesday, Aug. 21.
The blaze was reported at an ordnance impact field in the Camp Horno (which translates from Spanish to “oven” in English) area of the facility, base officials said in a Tweet posted at 4:47 p.m. No people or structures were at risk.

Officials decided to monitor the fire, but allow it to burn unhindered. Doing so is in the interest of firefighter safety and eliminates overgrown brush, Pendleton officials have said.
