156 guns seized after Anaheim man trips own burglary alarm, roommate invites police to investigate

A man accidentally tripped a burglary alarm in his Anaheim home and was arrested along with his housemate, who told officers over the phone to inspect their house, resulting in the discovery and seizure of over 150 guns from the residence on Monday, Dec. 16.

Officers responding to an automated notification from an alarm triggered at a house near West Broadway and South Archer Street found the front door of the dwelling open, Anaheim Police Sgt. Shane Carringer said. They called one of the people registered to that address, and he asked police to enter the home to investigate. Police found one of the home’s other residents in a backyard, in addition to high-capacity magazines and numerous firearms that were in plain view inside the home.

An Uzi, an AK-47 and high-powered rifles were among the guns confiscated. Not all of the 156 firearms taken from the residence are illegal to own in California, Carringer said. However, several had been fitted with illegal modifications or were missing serial numbers. At least one was a home-made “ghost gun,” assembled from parts purchased on the internet and practically untraceable unless it is registered with authorities.

There was no immediate indication the weapons had been used in past crimes, or were intended for use in future crimes, APD Sgt. Daron Wyatt said. Many of the firearms had been passed down from the father of one of the suspects. They had been legal in the past, but were not vetted by the proper authorities over the years as gun laws evolved in California, police said.

Anaheim residents Aaron Linss, 54, and Daniel Moore, 42, were arrested on suspicion of possessing illegal firearms, Anaheim police said in a news release. Moore remained in custody in lieu of $22,500 bail as of Wednesday. Linss was released Tuesday after posting bond. A third person living at the home was not arrested.
